The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City, is the largest art museum in the United States. With over 7 million visitors in 2016, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the 3rd most visited museum in the world and the 5th most visited museum of any kind. The Metropolitan Museum of Art features some of the most sought after and most prized pieces of arts and artifacts from around the world.

Come and discover pieces from Greek, Roman and Egyptian hieroglyphics to paintings by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Hals and Vermeer. The Metropolitan Museum of Art at 5th Avenue opened in 1872 and now also includes locations at The Cloisters and Fort Tryon Park.

The Museum of Modern Art, or MoMA, as it is often referred to is a very popular New York Museum.   MoMA is home to an amazing collection of contemporary and modern art from the masters including Pablo Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh, and more recent artists; Jackson Pollock, Henri Matisse, Mark Rothko.  MoMA is home to Van Gogh’s ‘The Starry Night.’

MoMA is also a place for many cultural events, films both domestic and international and educational programs.

If you are visiting with Kids, or adults who have an interest in discovery (doesn’t everyone) then the American Museum of Natural History is a ‘must visit’ New York attraction.  The American Museum of Natural History features many interactive exhibits and some exhibits with live insects and animals. 

Imagine interacting with live butterflies as you learn about them – this is just one recent exhibit.

Interested in a ‘night at the museum’ experience?  American Museum of Natural History offers a ‘Memories of a Lifetime’ sleepover several times a year.

The Whitney Museum of American Art, also known as “The Whitney" is located across from the High Line where you can view outdoor exhibitions that face the High Line.

The Whitney features over 21,000 pieces of art, primarily contemporary American art, film and performance. The Biennial exhibit showcases work created by invited artists, uniquely highlighting recent developments in American art. The museum was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1931 who was also a sculptor herself.

The Guggenheim Museum was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and is known for its unique spiral structure which offers an amazing way to view the museum’s collections and exhibits of modern film, architecture, sculpture and paintings. 

The Guggenheim Museum has an unmistakable architectural design that houses one of the most interesting ways to view and appreciate art and exhibits.

New York is home to many museums and it is difficult to create a definitive list of ‘Top 5’, so our recommendation is to visit as any New York Museums as you can and create your own ‘Top 5 New York Museums’ based on what you like and don’t like.
